Nature’s Shield

Nature’s Shield is an essential oil I am never without in the house.  With its antiseptic properties, it is my first go to oil in the case of someone even feeling like they are fighting an illness.

I try to keep a running list of ways to use Nature’s Shield.  My personal favorite way is to apply a drop (neat or undiluted) directly to my tongue to kill any germs lurking there.  This is a great way to get rid of a sore throat.  I still remember the one and only time I have ever had strep, I used the Thieves oil directly on my tongue and literally felt like I did not have a sore throat for about 15 minutes.  What a relief!  It also kept working to continue to improve my soreness.

Here are some various ideas that I have saved from multiple sources such as blogs, e-mails from other essential oil users, and books:

  1. Mix with a tablespoon of water, gargle and swallow for a sore throat.
  2. Add 1 drop of thieves and 1 drop of lemon essential oils to warm water and drink as tea.
  3. Apply to upper chest, lower back, upper back of thighs, and throat diluted with carrier oil for bronchitis, colds, or flu.
  4. Put a drop on your thumb and apply to the roof of your mouth for a headache; may take repeated applications.
  5. Put 4-8 drops in a capsule with olive oil and swallow daily for longevity and colds.
  6. For acne, apply to the skin diluted with a carrier. Some people even suggest undiluted if you do not have sensitive skin.
  7. Put a couple drops directly on the soles of your feet to protect you from colds and flu. Can be diluted in carrier oil depending on skin sensitivity.
  8. Diffuse in your home to keep the germ count down.
  9. Breathe in the vapors when you have lung congestion.
  10. Add a few drops to your dishwasher for cleaner dishes.
  11. Add to your laundry cycle for cleaner clothes. You can put a few drops of Nature’s Shield in the dryer on a wet washcloth or one of the articles that has just come through the wash. This gives the clothes additional deodorizing capabilities.
  12. For Insect bites such as mosquito, bee, and wasp stings, apply thieves to bite or sting to reduce inflammation, relieve pain and counteract toxins.
  13. You can lick 1 drop off top of your hand and swallow or you can drop 1-2 drops directly on your tongue, swish around in mouth to mix with saliva, and swallow slowly.
  14. For head and lung congestion, you can place a few drops in a steaming bowl of hot water, cover head with towel and inhale vapors.

  1. My wife has been buying Thieves for past 5-6 years. We just discovered NOWs Natures Shield at a health store. We have always ingested Thieves (place a drop in palm, lick it and swirl around in the mouth) but health store said that would be unwise. Why does NOW say do not take internally? Thieves does too by the way. This is going to save us big dollars!

    1. Certain of the oils are controversial for internal usage, so some companies tend on the extra cautious side. However, thieves has been used internally by aromatherapists for a long time. I personally use it internally except when pregnant. Just be aware that longer term usage of it can cause some slight indigestion. If that happens, then reduce the frequency. Also make sure the formula uses Eucalyptus radiata. Other forms of Eucalyptus can be dangerous to ingest. The Now formula as well as our own practitioner grade essential oils use the Eucalyptus radiata.

    2. Don’t listen to all the advise you hear in a health food store. I take 4 drops internally daily.

  2. I have Lyme disease and someone told me to take thieves in capsule
Work up to 8 drops three times a day. He said it put him In Remission. My question is now brand safe to internally ingest
Nature’s Shield? Up to eight drops?

    1. Hi Corkey,

Sorry for the delay in replying. Our daughter was born prematurely at 27 weeks, so I’m just now beginning to play catch up.

I have personally taken Thieves oil internally with great success. Be careful the amount as particularly the Clove oil can cause some burping/digestive imbalance once you reach the limit that your body can handle. For me that is about 1 drop every 1-2 hours on my tongue.

Specific to the Lymes disease, I would also look at the Oregano oil or capsules to take in combination as another excellent option.

  3. I’ve read mixed feelings about diffusing essential oils around dogs and cats. I love Natures Shield because it has made my allergies nonexistent this season but having recently read about how cats in particular are very sensitive, I am now Leary on using it in the house. My cats and dogs come and go freely outside/inside and I haven’t noticed any odd behavior from them. Quite a few of the ingredients are on the toxic list for cats. Do you know much about the safety of Natures Shield or can you point me in the right direction? Info seems to be very limited! Thanks!!

    1. Hi Kim,

We also have cats; however, they are outside. The only caution I would have to is to probably hesitate to actively diffuse when they are in the room. Applying the Nature’s Shield to your skin or other normal usage would be fine. I’ve never hesitated to use it and then be around my cats. The biggest caution is when it is applied directly to the cat. Please let me know if you have further questions.

  4. Can I use this in a spray bottle with water to clean surfaces (such as kids table and chairs and toys) in place of bleach water? What is the oil to water ratio for surface cleaning?

    Thanks

    1. Hi Shannon,

Yes, you can use Nature’s Shield to clean surfaces. Personally, I like to use about 40 – 50 drops mixed into a 4 ounce spray bottle filled with water when cleaning hard surfaces just to be on the stronger side. I use about 20 drops in a 4 ounce spray bottle filled with water when using it as an air freshener or on material surfaces.

  5. I’d love to know if this blend works as a mosquito repellent. I’m allergic (very sensitive) to mosquitoes and unfortunately they love me. I can’t go outside without getting numerous bites. And I’d love to go natural but I’ve tried a million different recipes and none have worked for me. I’d love to get some feedback on this! Thanks.

    1. Hi Christie,

I would definately give the Nature’s Shield a try. The clove is a good repelling oil, but in all honesty, the oils can be a bit tricky as each person gives off different “bug attracting” scents, so it can be a bit of trial and error. Citronella is another tried and true essential oil when it comes to bugs. Please let me know if you have further questions.

  6. Can you recommend books on essential oil use. Particularly topical and internal use.

    Thanks

  7. Hi I’m wondering if nature’s shield is safe for baby’s , and if so how to use it ??

    1. Hi Susana,

I personally would not have a problem with diffusing it in a room where my baby is once they are 6 months old or older. I would wait until they are at least a year or two before considering any other application.

  8. Hello. I would like advice about how to use nature’s shield to protect my children and husband while they are at school/work. Diffusing is not an option in either scenario, so I am considering mixing with a carrier oil (grapeseed) and spraying on their feet first thing in the morning. Then, the I’m interested in mixing with a carrier oil and placing in a roller for midday application around their neck area. Is this good advice? If so how do I safely combine it with the carrier oil (amounts of each)? Thank you!

    1. Hi Jennifer,

Both options you mentioned are good ideas. I also personally use a drop on my tongue whenever I am fighting something or have been exposed to someone who has been sick. You can only do that about 4-6 times a day as some of the oils can cause reflux.

As to specifics when combining with a carrier oil, I normally start with a 1:10 ration…meaning 1 drop essential oil to 10 drops carrier oil which can be converted up to teaspoons, Tablespoons, ounces, etc. Also, Almond oil can have a milder spray and is my favorite carrier oil.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

  9. I was wondering if it is ok to put a few drops in my tooth paste and is it ok to put a drop in my tea for colds I have kids and would like be as safe as possible with essential oils

    1. I was asking interference to the naures shield by NOW

    2. Hi Khaliah,

Yes, I would personally do either or both of what you are asking. Nature’s Shield is a great immune boosting blend. I do up to about 4-6 drops total a day. Some of the stronger oils can cause you to burp or some reflux if taking more on a daily basis.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

  10. hello! I just bought a bottle of Natures’ shield and would like to know if can apply directly on the feet area for my 2-1/2 year old granddaughter to prevent catching flu.

    Regards and thanks!

    1. I would recommend diluting it in a carrier oil such as almond oil – 1-2 drops of Nature’s Shield in 10 drops of almond oil. It is a warmer oil, so just to be safe with her tender skin at a young age.

  11. I watched a video of the many uses of Theives / Nature Shield. She brushes her teeth with it to prevent plack. Would it be safe to rub it on my dogs teeth to keep down plack and bad breath?

    1. Yes, dogs can handle oils much like humans. I typically recommend adults apply it up to 4 times daily.

  12. Recipe for roller ball immune booster for children 2 ro 10 yrs young ty
